About Us

The Taupō School of Music (TSoM) is a Charitable Institution founded in 1989, spearheaded by two locals, Elizabeth Marshall and the late Ingulf Revfiem. Their mission was to offer music lessons that were affordable and accessible to Primary and Intermediate aged children living in Taupō.

At the Taupō School of Music, instrumental tuition is offered in small groups of up to six pupils. Lessons are held at Taupō Primary School on Tuesdays from 3.30pm-6.00pm, during the school term. TSoM Principal Jo Paull (pictured above) and Coordinator Sarah Monro (pictured below), can be found in the TSoM office (the room next to Room 12), every Tuesday afternoon. The office is located just inside the Horomātangi Street entrance of Taupō Primary School.

In addition to weekly lessons, there are three ensembles under the umbrella of TSoM. They are the Keynotes Choir, the Youth Wind Band, and the Youth Strings Orchestra (currently in recess).

TSOM Ensembles

TSoM has three youth ensembles under its umbrella. They are the Youth Wind Band and the Keynotes Choir. The third ensemble, the Taupō Youth Orchestra, is currently in recess.

The three groups perform regularly in the Taupō community and there is no cost to participate.

The Keynotes Choir is a great introduction to TSoM. Singing in the choir augments learning an instrument as it improves rhythm, aural and vocal skills and is lots of fun. The Keynotes rehearse every Tuesday providing easy access to students also having an instrument lesson on the same day. For enquiries please contact the Principal of the Music School on tsomprincipal@gmail.com.

Students are invited to join either the Taupō Youth Wind Band or the Taupō Youth Orchestra (currently in recess) by their tutor once they have become competent at playing their instrument. These groups practise weekly at the Taupō Concert Band Rooms on AC Baths Avenue.  Playing in either of these ensembles will improve students' playing as well as teach them how to play in a group. Rehearsal time also provides at least one practice each week!

If your child signs up to play in either the Taupō Youth Wind Band or the Taupō Youth Orchestra, we may ask for your assistance in transporting gear to various venues when playing in the community.

Our Board

The Board of the Taupō School of Music meets monthly. It ensures the continued viability and running of the music school. Meetings are quick and efficient and we extend an invitation to any parent who may be keen to join. The AGM is held in June each year.
