Children may enrol in Ukulele from five years of age . The ukulele is an excellent rhythm instrument that offers an enjoyable introduction to music lessons. Pupils learn strum patterns and basic tablature notation before ideally progressing on to learn guitar.

Recorder 1
Children may enrol in Recorder 1 if they are six years of age or over. This class provides an excellent grounding for budding wind players. Pupils will learn basic notation, rhythm and breath control. Students will learn the basics of how to read music.

Recorder 2
To enrol in Recorder 2, students must have completed Recorder 1. Recorder 2 focuses on learning about more complex rhythmic patterns in music, harmonising and how to play in the upper register. Recorder 2 aims to develop sound musical skills through ensemble playing.

Students will need to bring their own recorder to lessons.

Children can learn the Violin from five years of age. It is a popular choice of instrument with classes from beginner to advanced level. Beginners will learn about music notation and rhythm. Students are introduced at an early stage to musical tunes. Intermediate level players will be invited to participate in the Youth Strings Orchestra.

Always a popular choice and often with a waiting list, students can enrol to learn the guitar from eight years old. TSoM offer many classes from beginners to intermediate level. All guitar lessons teach strum patterns and different chord techniques. Tablature is taught in all groups and students will learn to play in a variety of styles.

Learning the saxophone is suitable for past recorder and clarinet players. It is preferable to work with students who are 10 years or older and TSOM offer classes from beginner to intermediate level. Tutor books are required for every pupil and these will be available to purchase from TSOM.

Once students have reached intermediate level they will routinely be offered a place in the Taupō Youth Wind Band.
