A Big Day of Music - The Big Music Day
Another amazing, successful Big Music Day!! Students, tutors and conductors all arrived at the Great Lake Centre to begin our day at 9am. There were about 150 musicians in the orchestra, from Taupō’s local schools and homeschool, along with adult players from the Taupō Concert Band and the Taupō Strings Orchestra. A massive range of instruments were displayed - strings, brass, wind, guitars, keyboards, recorders, percussion and drums.
Our brilliant conductors, guest conductor Lauren Raby from Auckland, and our Youth Wind Band conductor, Matt West, rehearsed the orchestra through five different pieces of music during the day to culminate in the 4:30pm concert for the community. We were blown away by the number of people in attendance with the audience being large enough that many were standing!
The five pieces chosen for this year’s Big Music Day have been carefully scored by our TSoM principal, Jo Paull, so that every child, regardless of their ability, would be able to participate. The goal is that each musician attending leaves with a bit more confidence, experience, and has enjoyed being part of such a large orchestra. This year’s participants were particularly well behaved, which made the day pleasant for everyone involved!
Our guest performers included the popular Keynotes Choir, and the Taupō Youth Wind Band.
We were pleased to have many supporters attending the concert - of course family and friends, but also members of the community, including our mayor and many council members. Thank you to our Taupō School of Music Board and team of fantastic supporters and helpers that worked behind the scenes to make the day flow smoothly!
We are already looking forward to next year.
